Rare Phenomenon: Glaciers Advance Instead of Retreating

Researchers observed an Arctic glacier advancing more than ten meters per day, a rare phenomenon as most glaciers retreat due to global warming.

Rare Phenomenon: Glaciers Advance Instead of Retreating

Towering ice pillars constantly crack as the ice moves forward, a movement barely noticeable daily but clear over time. While most glaciers retreat rapidly with rising temperatures, a limited group behaves differently, suddenly advancing for several months or years after a period of stagnation. This phenomenon is known as glacier advance. Standing before a slowly advancing glacier is an exceptional experience. In 2012, researchers from the University of Portsmouth witnessed this during fieldwork at Nathorstbreen glacier in the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic, where the glacier advanced more than ten meters per day.
