Norwegian Army Prepares for Potential Seizure of Private Property in Case of War

Thousands of Norwegians have begun receiving messages from the armed forces informing them that their homes, vehicles, and boats could be seized in the event of a war. The army stated in a communiqué that «these confiscations aim to ensure that the armed forces, in wartime, obtain the necessary resources to defend the country». Approximately 13,500 preliminary seizure orders for 2026 will be issued. The communiqué clarified that these messages have no practical effect in peacetime, other than to alert citizens that the military may seize their property in the event of a conflict. The seizure request is valid for one year, and about two-thirds of the letters to be sent in 2026 are merely renewals of notices issued in previous years.
